How Often Should You Pick Up Dog Poop? (The Honest Answer)

It's one of the most common questions we get from new clients. The short answer: more often than most people do it. Here's the breakdown by dog count, yard size, and season, plus why waiting too long costs you more than just an unpleasant afternoon.

The general rule of thumb

Veterinarians and lawn care professionals generally agree: pick up dog waste at least once per week for a single dog, and twice per week for two or more dogs. But that's the minimum, not the ideal. The longer waste sits, the more bacteria, parasites, and ammonia compounds work their way into your soil. In Brooks, where we have freeze-thaw cycles through winter and spring, waste that gets buried under snow can leach into the root zone all at once when the ground softens.

Quick reference by dog count

1 dog: once per week minimum, twice is better.
2 dogs: twice per week minimum.
3+ dogs: every 2–3 days, or weekly professional service.

Why waiting longer than a week is a problem

After about 7 days, dog waste starts breaking down in ways that are harder to reverse. Nitrogen burns become more severe, killing grass roots rather than just bleaching the blades. Parasite eggs like Toxocara canis (roundworm) begin embedding in the soil, and roundworm eggs can survive for years once they're in. Fly populations also increase significantly around older waste, which can become a nuisance for neighbours and affect your enjoyment of the yard.

What about winter in Brooks?

This is the big one. Many Brooks homeowners let waste accumulate through the winter thinking the cold preserves it or kills bacteria, it doesn't. Freezing actually suspends bacteria and parasites in a dormant state. When spring arrives and the ground thaws, you get a sudden dump of months' worth of contamination into your lawn all at once. We call it the "spring thaw surprise." A single-day spring cleanup after a long winter almost always runs into the heavy-buildup category.

Winter tip for Brooks homeowners

Even if the ground is frozen, try to clear visible waste every 2 weeks through winter. It's much easier to manage in small amounts than all at once in April. Our bi-weekly plan runs year-round for exactly this reason.

When to consider professional service

If you have more than one dog, a large yard, mobility challenges, or you simply don't enjoy it (valid), a recurring professional service pays for itself quickly. You avoid the health risks of accumulation, keep your lawn in better condition, and spend your yard time actually enjoying it. Our weekly service starts at $20 for one dog.
